Aciclovir is used to treat genital herpes infection. It helps to protect the virus from itself. This medicine contains the active ingredient aciclovir. It belongs to a group of medicines called antivirals.

When a person has genital herpes, their body produces an enzyme called type 2 diacylglycerol (DAG). DAG breaks down an antibody that makes some herpesvirus proteins (taken from the virus itself), so DAG attacks the virus. Once these proteins have been destroyed, the virus is able to multiply and spread. Aciclovir works by stopping the multiplication of the herpesvirus proteins, so the virus is less likely to be able to attack the person’s body. This medicine is only of antiviral medicine type, so do not take it if you have a viral infection.

Method of Action: This medicine works by inhibiting viral DNA synthesis. This stops the herpesvirus from multiplying and spreading.

Directions for Use: The usual dose is one 500mg tablet twice a day, preferably on the same day each day. The dosage may be increased to one tablet in the morning or dosage forms may beumented to one 500mg tablet in the evening.

Side Effects: Some people have experienced mild side effects such as diarrhoea, headache, nausea, vomiting, and breast pain. Very rarely, these are blurred vision, sensitivity to light, and allergic reactions.

Warnings and Precautions: Do not take Aciclovir if you are allergic to aciclovir, valaciclovir, propylene glycol, or any of its ingredients. It is not recommended to take it if you have had chickenpox or shingles. It is not recommended to take it if you have ever had an allergic reaction to aciclovir.

Before taking Aciclovir, tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or liver disease. You must also tell your doctor if you have ever had an allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines. This medicine may cause an allergic reaction, especially when used at the first signs of an allergic reaction. Avoid contact with the eyes.

It is not recommended to take this medicine whilst allergic to this medicine or any other medicines. If you are allergic to aciclovir, valaciclovir, or any other medicine, you must tell your doctor before taking this medicine.
